Sunshine abounds-Let’s talk Sunburn

As Spring and Summer arrive, the days get longer, and the sun gets brighter. This is great for those who love to bask in the sun’s rays; however, the sun on our skin can cause all kinds of problems. These problems can range from minor irritations to significant health problems. Sunshine is good for us in moderation. It can improve attitude, decrease winter depression, and help our bodies get Vitamin D. On the other hand, it can also cause skin damage, pain, and discomfort.

This is a picture of someone who did not apply sunscreen before spending time in the sun. This kind of burn tends to be tender to the touch, feel sore, and be itchy. Some relief can be gotten from over-the-counter medications and ointments, such as aloe vera gel, an anti-itch cream, an oatmeal bath, or a spray such as solarcaine.

Most often, after a few days, you can expect a sunburn of this degree to peel. Keeping the area hydrated and moisturized will help; as well as avoiding the sun until healed.

The highest risk of sun exposure is the development of skin cancers.

If you ever you have a question about a skin lesion/sore; please see your doctor immediately. Most skin cancers are treatable if caught early.

I hope this information has helped. Please apply sunscreen with a SPF of 30 plus for the best protection, and reapply often!
